Home schooling?

I’ve been putting more and more thought into it and I think I’ve made up my mind. Kyle and I have been working diligently to pay off debt and once that is done, to save as much as possible. By the time we have our next child, I would like to be close to being able to stay home with them. It’s articles like these that convince me that home schooling is best. If I can’t afford private school for my kids at 20k per year, I can make every effort possible to give them the best education they can get by teaching them myself.

The article below details an embarassing mishap currently taking place in Georgia. Nearly 40% of eight graders have failed the math portion of the CRCT exam, preventing them from moving on to high school unless they go to summer school. For our 6th and 7th graders, over 80% failed the social studies exam, claiming that it covered material they had never seen. How does this happen!?

Just shameful!!!!

I think basing a decision on one report is short-sighted at best. If you look at your opportunities that you got by going to public school, I don’t know how you could consider home schooling. The test results are skewed, and you should understand that there is most likely a mis-match between the test and standards (new standards and new tests both). Further, it’s not about schools or scores, it’s about teachers and an involved parent makes the best partner for a school.
I’ll be sad if Claire is relegated to the home school sector. (Further, I can’t imagine you’d give up a career and life with grownups).

Aubrey, I have to agree with your mom on this one. As a teacher, I say parents are the best advocates for their children. Parents set the standard for acceptable behavior, grades, morals, etc… Really, did you have the best teachers? Think about what made the biggest difference in your education. Was it really the teachers, the school? Trust me, I understand the dilemma. The best thing you can do as a parent it to be involved! I have a feeling that won’t be a problem. :)

I also agree with your Mom. Fortunately you have a few years to wait before you have to make the decision.
